A Matter of Choice

Common wisdom has it that a shotgun is the best gun to use for home defense. This advice is often supplemented with such encouraging comments as, “You don’t need to aim, just point it in the general direction.” Usually added to this, with a knowing look, is another supposed statement of fact that, “Just the sound of racking a shell into it is enough to get him running.” Let’s take a look at these shotgun myths.

This is a problem that many of us face: our significant other didn’t grow up with guns and is either hostile or afraid of them. How do you change their minds?

After I encountered the story of Keith Labrozzi, and that of Stephen Swan and Matthew Butler, I felt compelled to share a few of my lessons learned. Then as I approached her, she said in a voice that was a mixture of crying and disbelief, “Don, Steve didn’t have his gun! He always carries his gun! When he comes to my house, he has his gun on him under his shirt. He doesn’t go anywhere without his gun! Don, he didn’t have his gun!
