The Oldest Cliche in the Book…

…is, “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.”

No-so-merry old England is certainly proving the point:

Guns ‘out of control’ as robberies soar

Labour was accused last night of losing control of gun crime as figures showed a sharp rise in armed robberies.

Guns were used in 4,120 robberies last year - a ten per cent jump - including a nine per cent rise to 1,439 in the number of street robberies where guns were used.

There was also a rapid and unexplained increase in the number of times householders were confronted in their homes by armed criminals.

Residential firearms robberies show a 46 per cent leap, a record 645 cases in England and Wales - up 204 on the previous year and four times the level recorded in 2000-01. Source

How could this happen? Isn’t crime supposed to go away and the Garden of Eden be restored when you strip the serfs of their means of self defense? And, of course when criminal empowerment succeeds just as we predicted it would, what is to be done? Admit that perhaps the policy was dead wrong? Oh, no. Blame it on somebody else:

“It is exacerbated by our porous borders, which allow illegal weapons to flow into the country.”

Home Office Minister Tony McNulty said: “We have some of the toughest firearms legislation in Europe.”

…and gee, isn’t it working well! And then, if the blame game doesn’t work, try to spin the statistics:

Home Office Minister Tony McNulty admitted that robberies on homes using firearms had risen but attempted to paint a generally brighter picture, saying firearms offences overall had fallen.
He said: ??Firearms offences have fallen significantly by 14 per cent in the year up to September 2006, which amounts to 1,642 fewer incidents.
??While there is a small rise in residential firearm robberies, these account for a tiny proportion of recorded offences overall.? source

And I bet that’s really comforting to those folks cringing defenseless in their homes waiting for the next armed robber to prey upon them. Home Office Minister McNulty, you deserve to be beaten to within an inch of your life for saying such a thing. That is nothing short of depraved indifference to the lives and suffering of your disarmed law abiding citizens (or should that be “peasants”?). I notice Prince Harry’s girlfriend gets an armed bodyguard. What about the rest?

The thing that really amazes me is that this is the exact kind of thing that the Brady Campaign and the Violence Policy Center want to bring to the United State. They’re not after .50 caliber “sniper rifles,” “Saturday Night Specials,” or AK-wannabe “assault weapons.” They’re after all of the guns. They want to ban them all — make us just like the UK, helpless, defenseless slaves. They can look at the total failure of gun control in the UK and still they want to impose it on us. Why? Because they’re not about safety and security; they’re about control. Anything they don’t understand, anything that makes them uneasy, they want to control. They don’t care about the Constitution, liberty, or civil rights. They don’t care about the people they pretend to want to make “safer.” They care only about control.

Gun grabbers, be they British or American, labor under the grand illusion that if you just pass enough laws and ban enough inanimate objects, life will be safe and easy. No one will get hurt, and no one will have to think or take responsibility for their own lives. No one will be able to stand in the way of their master plan. We can live like livestock grazing mindlessly in a field. In the grand sweep of human experience, such a condition has never existed, and by the looks of things, it shall not appear soon.

Freedom demands effort. It requires responsibility and morality. It requires people willing to do the right thing, and, at times, it requires arms.

“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.??? Samuel Adams
