“Is the 1911 .45 an outdated design”
Of course the 1911 is an outdated design. It came from an era when weapons were designed to win fights, not to avoid product liability lawsuits. It came from an era where it was the norm to learn how your weapon operated and to practice that operation until it became second nature, not to design the piece to the lowest common denominator. It came from an era in which our country tried to supply its fighting men with the best tools possible, unlike today, when our fighting men and women are issued hardware that was adopted because of international deal-making or the fact that the factory is in some well-connected congressman’s district.
Yes, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the 1911 IS an outdated design….and that’s exactly what I love about it.

Great post!
Right on, brother!
Sometimes it’s the old designs that are the most reliable. Put it this way- if you were stranded in foreign territory, what would you rather have at your side? a M9 or 1911 government? Colt please!
I like the pistol and it’s design the 1911. Sometimes I think that the original pistol was way ahead of it’s time. The gun will give reliability issues sometimes which is frustrating. All in all I still carry mine daily and recommend it to anyone looking for a good weapon for personal protection.
I’m in the military. They issue us the Beretta 9mm. I hate this thing. The 1911 is one of the best built sidearms ever made. And because it is an all steel design, it has a secondary function. It’s not a pistol whip with this thing, it’s clubbing.
Second that. I wish I could get away with bringing my 1911 on deployment. 124 grain 9mm rounds dont do a whole lot of damage fast enough, those 230 grain .45’s are like spanking a christmas ham…they put guys down for the count.
There’s reason “old” designs are still around- they work.
I expect there will still be 1911s around in another hundred years.
