Smith & Wesson I-Bolt Rifle Recall
December 15th, 2008 by Syd
Smith & Wesson has identified a condition that may exist with the bolt supplied with some rifles that would allow the striker to become disengaged from its locking tabs during cycling of the bolt, allowing the rifle to fire without the trigger being pulled. In the interest of consumer safety, we are initiating this recall to allow for the prompt inspection and, if necessary, the repair and replacement of each bolt.
This recall applies to the bolts of all i-Bolt rifles manufactured by Smith & Wesson prior to December 1, 2008.
Please contact Smith & Wesson directly at 1-800-331-0852 or at ibolt@smith-wesson.com to arrange for the inspection and repair, if necessary, of your bolt.

I wonder if all the pundits are going to come out and exclaim “what is up with all the recalls at Smith & Wesson” like they did regarding Ruger’s LCP (second recall in a few years).
Or if Smith & Wesson will be spared such lashings because it’s an older name with more legacy behind it?
Frankly, this sounds like a much more serious issue than either the SR-9 or LCP.

I am just glad when any arms manufacturer recalls a product when they discover a safety issue. Shows me that they’re a good company. And with both S&W and Ruger, recalls are pretty infrequent - especially compared to cribs.
:-)
Smith & Wesson has a very bad design in the I-bolt. Just spend a few hours with one and you will see. Gun fires when bolt closes, bolt falls out unexpectedly ect.. After speaking to the head of marketing and customer service I realized that the company behind the product match the gun quite well.
I bought the I bolt last year. I wanted a cheap 30-06 and that is exactly what I got. You can’t mount a shoulder strap on it because the molded rings are two thick and the hole improperly sized. I called Smith and Wesson and was pretty much told, tough!
Now I’m waiting to receive the FedEx mailer to send in the bolt. I would advise all to stay away from this rifle. The customer service stinks and the attitude of the gentleman that I talked to was as bad as the rifle itself.
For the money, there are much better rifles new and used.
