I don’t carry a gun…

Model_642_8_200 … to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don’t carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry. I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don’t carry a gun because my sex organs are too small. I carry a gun because I want to continue to use those sex organs for the purpose for which they were intended for a good long time to come.

I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don’t carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

I carry a gun because of all the reasons above and the fact that I live in California… The one state where there are not enough squirrels to take care of all the “nuts” and you tell me that I can’t carry a gun…Ya Right! I think that everybody {California and elsewhere} should carry a gun. They can’t stop us all, and there would be a big drop in crime… We should be building more shooting ranges instead of prisons. If you want to get rid of crime in this country then the government should be teaching law-a-biding citizens how to shoot… No! not our military… These are kids that are robots that are taught to kill. It’s a little bid different in a suburban area where you actually have to think before you draw your weapon…

Syd; I agree completely. I made my mind up around 36 years ago that if I could carry every minute of every day for the rest of my life and never use my gun I’d die happy. But I WILL have one. Thanks for saying that piece so well for all of us;Regards;Al

Syd…You nailed it my friend…reasons…all fully understandable and without reservation.

I’d like to see some of these anti-gun gurus’ have to deal with this little write-up. In other words…discredit your reasons for carrying a gun…they can’t…and if they try…it proves they live in an all-together different world.

    Thanks Syd!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now…with your permission…I would like to put this on the 1911 group…or…better yet…you do it.

I sincerely thank God there are still people around who CAN think, and DO, and also have such wonderful talent in expressing their thoughts to the rest of us. I saw a sign in front of a church in Lexington several years ago that said: “Truth is ever scarce, however the supply seems to always exceed the demand.” Excellent, excellent words…and I thank you for them. Absolutely excellent. I would add:

I don’t carry a gun to do a cop’s job. I carry a gun because a cop may not be available when I need him to save my life.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m looking for trouble. I carry a gun to defend my life from the trouble that may find me.

I carry a gun because my I was reared by people who taught me that to be free meant making the price of taking my freedom too high for anyone to pay. The same people taught me - beginning at age four - to be both totally responsible about guns and good enough with them to shoot small objects out of the air. By sixteen years of age, I had learned and been shown that everywhere someone like me went, the place was safer for my being there. Once I had for the fourth time stopped a serious crime (in that case, a gang rape), I had no doubt that it was true. I carry a gun, and train daily to assue that I am good enough with it, because it is the responsible thing to do - just as my grandfather taught me.

Syd, the more you write, the more gifted you become with expression in words. You have said what many of us attempt to explain, but, in an eloquent manner which is not so fierce.

    Thank you,

    Bill

Excellent — I only wish I could enumerate the reasons as well as you have. I have also noted Al Robbins’ two additions and I consider them to be absolutlely correct. I live in California where the interpetation regarding the issueance of a CCW permit varies to the point that many of us simply can not obtain a permit regardless of our back ground; history as a good citizen; military service; income or anything else. Just try to get a CCW permit in Sacramento County, CA. Gun owners and retired military need a focus provided by a person of national recognition to convince all of the folks who are too busy to vote to realign their priorities.

    Regards to all,

    Jim

Syd, this does sum it up very nice.

What I don’t understand is this. And I’m new to this whole thing here so bare with me. Why isn’t this more main stream? Where is the push to put this in the American public’s face? Why are we posting on blog sites that Senators and Congressman don’t read? And the biggest question of them all is where is the NRA? Why aren’t the tackling this on a state by state basis to make this talk a reality?

Like I said before I’m new to all of this and I’m still doing a lot of research but it doesn’t seem like we are organized enough. When I Google concealed weapons the first real website is Wikipedia, then a Florida State website then the Brady Campaign why is this.? Why isn’t the NRA the top of the search. My firm belief is If we were better organized it wouldn’t matter who was in office our voices and our votes would make it possible.

    Just my thoughts.

When there is no pain, no death, no challenge, no struggle, there will be no courage, no perseverance, no adversity, and no disapointment we will lose the best part of being human. When we structure our life and society devoid of every human challenge there will be no courage no perseverence, no honor, no campassion, no caring and no commitment. We will have lost the best parts of who we are because we will have let our fear steal them from us. We will no longer need each other and this will be the greatest tragedy.

The role of the warrior as a stabalizing influence in civilized society and protector of the weak is as old as civilization itself.”

Too make a long story short, I was shot twice with a 357 magnum by someone who said he loved me. Yea right almost loved me too death. I was shot in the chest and thru the left hand trying too grab the gun. I am now ready too buy my own gun. The perpetrator only got 15 years and said he would be back too finish the job. He will be getting out soon. Guess what folks guns don’t kill people, people kill people!!!!!! It’s the choices made by people who own guns.

I think it’s all spot on, except maybe for this one:

“I don’t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.”

    Huh?

Not only do I not understand this sentiment, but I have to ask, why wait? If you want to be a cowboy, come on out to Wickenburg, where you can enjoy being one even BEFORE you die. Aside from the requisite horses, cows, and ranches, which we have plenty of, permit-free open carry is not only legal here but common.

P.S.: We also have our share of keyboard cowboys who sling bytes all week and ride and rope for fun on weekends.

Excellent article and they’re all good…

    I don’t carry a gun…

…because I hate the world but, because I love my peaceful community and feel a responsibility to keep it that way.

…to scare my law-abiding neighbors, but to impress any criminal who comes among us of the necessity for him to actively seek another trade.

…because I need to but, because I live in a place that says I can.

  40. on 21 Aug 2008 at 10:06 pmArtful Dave

    Excellent, Syd. I would add:

I don’t carry a gun because I’m looking for a gunfight, just like I don’t own a fire extinguisher because I’m looking to fight fires. Having a gun readily available evens the odds in a gunfight, just like having a fire extinguisher readily available evens the odds of surviving a fire.

    Greetings Wisconsinites!

To update you, we are having a musicians fundraiser benefit for long time chromatic and diatonic harmonica player, Donald ‘Doc’ Pfaff, here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and hope that any organizations and individuals can participate in ways that they are able, even though not near in proximity. I will share the details specifically in an upcoming e-mail, in the next week. Doc is hurt worse than we thought. The venue robbers hit him with a bullet from an assault weapon. It is extremely dis-fortunate that Doc got randomly hurt. He will survive but will not remain the same and will definitely need support, although he suggests that he will not

The event/fundraiser will be held at a secure venue, and has donated BOTH stages for performance as well as full production equipment (PA’s)…it is in Milwaukee, and is owned by Ian Pesch of The Globe South. He just bought and rebuilt the venue which still goes by it’s former name (they have not changed the sign outside yet), and that is Liquor Sweets, on 13th St. and Montana (near Oklahoma Ave.), in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Occupancy 550). We will also set up a proper PO Box for donations, and that will be in the next e-mail as well. Please stay tuned for details, and if you have not heard of this musical tragedy, please read below, for included in this e-mail is what I wrote shortly after the incident. I was rather shaken at the time and wrote it to alert friends and musicians, and not to slight or offend anyone.

Oh and by the way, special thanks goes to Musical Legend and Impresario Mark Shurilla, who offered to assist us in throwing this special event, as well as donated his song “Don’t Blame the Polka Band’ which he wrote in the 80’s when Milwaukee’s annual ‘world re-known’ Polka-fest was killed and disbanded, when multiple bandits took over and mercilessly robbed event goers, while waiving around their weapons (who remembers this?), and ruined that musical movement, held on Milwaukee’s Northwest side. As a musician, he/we all feel, that this just is not right, and want to educate the public on safety, and provide ideas and solutions to our community through this experience, as crime goes up and arms flow into the USA. Read the Shepherd Express’ view on this problem at hand:http://www.expressmilwaukee.com/article-4966-what-the-gun-industry-and-the-nra-donrst-want-you-to-know.html

Also, Thanks go to the We-Force (local chapter of NRA) and Wisconsin Patriots, who may be more ‘pure’ in intent than this last article suggests re: gun advocates, and who will hopefully have an information booth at the event. Music Cares (of the Grammy’s), and Finally JAM for SAM (serving ailing musicians) may be present as well, hopefully along with the WAMI’s (Wisconsin Area Music Industry). As you can see, we are rallying for a good cause: Peace & Safety thru Education, and hopefully more responsible citizens will step up and learn the proper way to handle protection devices, such as guns…. and Doc is a wonderful poster child, although we would have preferred to move forward on this subject, without any victim at the helm, but certainly we are taking action now, and hope to mobilize the communities of musicians, instrument manufacturers and sellers, club owners, and weapon education facilitators, to thwart these burgeoning and unfortunate issues.

Finally, thank you to Ian Pesch of Liquor Sweets, Andy Kochanski of The Concertina Bar, Conway’s Smokin Bar and Grill for their support, and The Stone in Bayview, and any owner of taverns willing to step up and donate their time and assistance in educating themselves, and their staff, and their venue’s musicians, in an attempt to provide an atmosphere sober, cognizant, and safe, for performing artists. Meanwhile, criminals bank on the idea that the rooms are filled with ‘waste cases’. To which Andy Kochanski’s would supplant, as stated in an article on him and his fine establishment, ….the gunmen were just lucky that they did not get blasted from multiple off duty police and firefighters…., who support public safety and serve vigilant, even though off duty, in many tavern locales throughout our musical town.

We would like to facilitate a tavern crawl to honor those taverns participating in this event, any volunteers? Also, thank you to Don Lorenz of The Milwaukee Harmonica Club, who plans to make a presentation for Doc, at this event, as he recoups from his injuries. Thank you for your time. Please contact me in coordination of all things related!Barbara Meyer-Spidell414.333.3334

    written prior:
Kochanski’s Concertina Bar, I must note, is still a great place, and I and all the musicians should and will still continue to go there to enjoy GREAT live Bluegrass and Polka Performances. It is not in a ‘bad’ neighborhood. It was just targeted because of the popularity, that night, but the the Bandits learned a lesson the hard way. Kochanski’s is always filled with good light hearted musicians, and in no way should suffer as a result from this. Andy Kochanski is a hero, and makes an excellent barkeep and owner. He protected us, his customers and friends, with astounding valor and heroism, and deserves accolades for these heroic efforts, and so does Doc, for his Musician’s war wound. I wrote this below right after the altercation and was still probably in shock!

I was at Kochanski’s Concertina Bar tonight, after our gig at Conway’s, when two gunman showed up with Sawed off shot guns and started firing and shot our harmonica player friend Doc (He will survive)…I cannot believe it- unreal…they fired into a group of 4 people standing there in the corner next to the stage (what pr*&%^s! to shoot at a group of humans!) and shot old Doc—one of the finest German style harmonic/harmonica players I know…Praise God that he will survive, and he will, thankfully. One of the gunman was shot in the chest but both got away…what a night beyond- beyond…If I had not recieved a phone call from my ‘ex’ a minute before, which I did not answer, and went into the Bathroom to check my messages, I would be dead right now, for real. I would have been the only one in the crossfire– Andy Kochanski, the owner, pulled out his .45 and blasted those guys, but still they got away—but one was hit square in the chest. It was pandemonium.

They may have targeted the place because there had been a big Musical Christmas Party there earlier– it is a popular Musicians hangout because of it’s support of Live Entertainment (mostly polka and bluegrass)–No words were exchanged….Andy the owner/barkeep notticed a silhouette of two people walking past the windows in the alleyway ( and thought ‘more customers? hmmm’…), so he was looking at the door when they came in- and saw their guns immediately dropped- and immediately reached for his, which happened to be right in front of him at an arms length. The gunmen then seeing Kochanski move, started firing and then Andy started blasting away- One gunman reeled back- he had been hit- but spun around and ran out the door….but not before they unloaded the two shots, one hitting the mirror behind the bar, the other, Dear Doc.

So there I was in the bathroom, crouching on the floor, dialing 911, thinking ‘what the *&^!’. I waited, then I heard all this ‘foot shuffling’ about- I was thinking to myself the worst- everyone is dead and the gunman are inside still…but to my relief, I then heard a woman say, ‘Is that door is locked too?’, so I came out and said ‘Is anyone hurt?’ and they said ‘Yes, Doc got shot, clean through.’

…so I went to him and a woman was holding a towel on his wound and he looked okay and said he was going to make it, and we were all freaking out….It went right through his buttox and out the other side, he reached down and put his finger into the hole…dang…and we just waited for what seemed like an eternity for the ambulance and when I asked him if he was in pain, he said ‘No, but when it hit me it felt like a sledge hammer’….I said ‘Can I take a picture for the band’, and he said, ‘You better believe it’, but the cops showed up and said, ‘No way lady’, and Andy (the owner) said ‘Do it’ and the cops said, ‘Do and you will be in real trouble’, so I only got a few….I could care less about the pictures…I am relieved Doc is okay and I am concerned for society, deeply….
It happened last night- Dec 19th at 1:12 am, I was checking my messages in the bathroom, as I mentioned, so I know exactly, the time…The snow probably took the headlines, as suggested.

People are wondering what the motive was: It is of the opinion that their motive WAS robbery but remember- Andy Kochanski (Art Altenburg’s Concertina Bar’s new owner- 37th and Becher)- he saw their gun first and ducked quickly, and luckily, as a bullet whizzed by, he drew his- which made them fire right away at him and the crowd (they shot off 2 and then Andy blasted 5 right back), and when Andy fired back he hit the first guy square (he is a fireman/rescue squad guy and he practices many diciplines- he is a real sinewy and buff, nimble kind of a guy)

    - He was looking at the door to see who was coming in b/c he saw potential customers pass by the window and was alert to their entry- saw the gun first and drew his—he saved the day, really he did. The gunmen were so covered from head to toe, in black, that you could not tell if they were black, white or hispanic. Andy is fine- he is a hero, in my book, really…

I would have been a gonner if I would have been at my seat…I would have taken a bullet, for sure or been grabbed as a hostage, I know this, there is no way that I would have made it- I will never sit in a bar in a vulnreable position like that again, ever…. I asked Doc for the next of kin to contact and he said ‘I aint dying’….so that was a relief… [or so I thought, he was in shock and was probably closer to his brush with the otherworld than he made mention.]

He is the old style German harmonica player who has a suitcase filled with those extravagant little button/contraption style harmonicas- a collection worth at least a thousand or more, I am sure, and very state of the Art–no one does what he is doing-not locally anyways, and he is straight up classic in style, really really really good, and one of a kind…. He will be okay– but the whole thing was a shocker…

  48. […] So coming back to the guns, it’s about fighting back. It’s about deterrence. DC v. Heller and Texas’s Castle Doctrine codifies in the law what God has granted to us: that we are able to defend ourselves when we have reason to believe our lives and property are in danger.  If you know there’s a 12 gauge on the other side of that door, are you going to break it down? I would reason most criminals would move along looking for the easier target. So, I would say that I carry a gun not because I want to use it, but because I hope by carrying it I won’t be in a position where I’d have to (Syd sums it up well). Which brings me to concealed carry. While I still believe shotguns and rifles are good for home defense use, I believe that a concealed handgun will provide me with the most options. The main reason? I can always have it with me. What good is something if you don’t have it when you need it? What about the Boy Scout motto to “Be Prepared”? That’s what this all comes out of. I may not have earned my Eagle Scout (got to Life rank), but the teachings of Scouting are very much a part of me. […]

I carry a gun because it’s leagle for me to do so and because I can. I’m safer and the people around me are safer too. The police are safer with me armed and on their side. Even people that hate guns are safer because I and people like me have guns and carry them.
Remember drugs are illegal and it seems that the bad guys have all the drugs thay want. So if law biding people like me do not carry guns because they’ve become illegal to own or carry, would you exspect the bad guys to surrender
thier guns? When they won’t surrender thier illegal drugs.
Wake up liberals and realize that it is we, the people with the legal guns and legally carrying them that keep you and your kids and mothers and your dads safe. BECAUSE THE BAD GUYS DO NOT KNOW IF YOU ARE ONE OF US OR NOT. Otherwise the bad guys would do thier illegal drugs and grab thier illegal guns and illegally come to you and I and take what they want while you wait for big brother to come and save your back side.
SO liberals leave our guns and gun rights alone so you can sleep soundly and have nice dreams.
Law abiding people will never harm you only protect you
    either directly or by defalt.
