LaSalle County to vote on carrying guns

LaSalle County Board members voted unanimously Thursday to put a referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot asking voters if they support the right to carry concealed firearms.

The resolution was passed 25-0, with board Chairman Jerry Hicks abstaining. Robert Jakupcak, Ronald Dittmer and Thomas Ganiere were absent.

"All comments made on the referendum were pretty much favorable," said board member Randy Freeman. "The only concern the sheriff (Tom Templeton) brought up was making sure it referenced House Bill 1304 to have state police doing the issuing, testing and background checks if it’s passed."

The County Board’s sheriff and rules committee recently passed a unanimous resolution to put a referendum on the ballot. During Thursday’s full board meeting, State’s Attorney Brian Towne said while he’d like to remain neutral on the referendum, he thinks it will have to go through several amendments before it’s finally enacted.

Boone County Board Votes on Resolution to Support Concealed Carry

BELVIDERE -  Boone county is the latest to take up the issue of concealed carry.   Board members approved a symbolic resolution in support of it.   Just like in Winnebago County, the issue of concealed carry has come up several times in Boone County.   On Wednesday, it joins 77 other counties that have stated their support for the house bill on concealed carry in Springfield.

The Boone County Board Members hope the vote they made will have an effect at the state level.   Head of the County’s Public Safety Committee, Dana LaPier said,  "This is merely a symbolic resolution to support that."  Two board members are opposed to supporting concealed carry.

Boone County Board Chairwoman Catherine Ward said, "Some of them believe that [they] are in favor of [owning] a weapon, but they’re not in favor of a concealed weapon. That was the reason for some of them. And also our sheriff has said he has some concerns about how this would be handled and to make sure we do it in the right way."

Evanston won’t amend handgun ban yet

Evanston will hold off amending its handgun ordinance until officials see what gun control groups come up in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling against total handgun bans.

Aldermen held off action Monday night on a resolution in which they express intent to amend the city’s weapons ordinance in a way to conform with the court’s ruling. The June 27 Supreme Court decision held unconstitutional provisions of a Washington, D.C., ordinance similar to Evanston’s, that contains a total ban on handguns.

Meanwhile Monday evening, the Morton Grove Village Board, by a 5-1 vote, repealed its landmark 27-year-old handgun ban at its meeting.

Under the proposal Evanston City Council members were mulling, a homeowner would be allowed to keep a firearm at his or her residence so long as the person possesses a current and valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.
