NJ senator demands NRA response on spying charge

By MARYCLAIRE DALE
The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - A Democratic U.S. senator from New Jersey demanded Thursday that the National Rifle Association respond to charges it placed a paid spy in rival gun-control organizations for more than a decade.

The powerful firearms lobby has remained silent since reports broke last week that gun-control activist Mary McFate, 62, of Sarasota, Fla., was allegedly snooping on several of the nonviolence groups for the NRA.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg asked the NRA to confirm or deny the charge; reveal what she was paid, if anything; disclose the names of any other informants in the gun-control movement; and put a stop to the practice.

"Although the NRA and I have certainly had our disagreements over the years, I hope that we can agree that the gun violence prevention debate should be based upon an open and honest exchange of ideas, not on underhanded tactics," Lautenberg wrote in a letter faxed Thursday to NRA headquarters in Virginia.

Dear Sen. Lautenberg: Your “open and honest exchange of ideas” is the N-th degree of hypocrisy. You and your gun grabber friends have never been “open and honest” nor are you being so on this issue. If you would take five seconds to read the news reports on this silly matter, you would see that the NRA had no direct connection with the activities of Mary McFate, nor did they need to. See the Philadelphia Inquirer article on this matter if your octogenarian memory is failing you.

Sen. Lautenberg, if you and your gun grabbing friends want “open and honest” why don’t you start by being open and honest about your agenda to disarm law-abiding American citizens in order to establish the all-powerful socialist nanny state. If you want “open and honest” how about admitting that you and your allies are engaged in an incremental campaign make all firearms illegal. That would be a good start. Put your cards on the table and we’ll be happy to have an “open and honest” discussion with you and your fellow hive drones.

Were you trying to be “open and honest” you wouldn’t be trying to make an issue of this trivial story. How many moles does each side have planted in the other? What statute makes it illegal? The NRA doesn’t owe you anything, and if they have any sense, they’ll tell you to put your fax where the sun don’t shine.

If your gun-grabbing buddies have nothing to hide, why are they so upset that an elderly woman managed to penetrate their ranks? Embarrassing, isn’t it? As Grand Daddy used to say, “It’s the hit dog that howls.”

Well said. I love when the gun grabbers try to portray themselves as being honest. It gives me the giggles.
