Obama says he doesn’t have votes in Congress to ban guns

Posted by Jacob on September 6, 2008 at 11:57 am

Obama just won’t keep quiet about guns. The Wall Street Journal reports from the campaign trail in PA:

“… A woman in the crowd told Obama she had “heard a rumor” that he might be planning some sort of gun ban upon being elected president. Obama trotted out his standard policy stance, that he had a deep respect for the “traditions of gun ownership” but favored measures in big cities to keep guns out of the hands of “gang bangers and drug dealers’’ in big cities “who already have them and are shooting people.” “If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room. So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’ …”

Yes, this can and will be the reason people won’t vote for him.

So the flip side of that statement would be…”If I HAD the votes, I WOULD take your guns”.
Seems to me that with the political wrangling those guys do…it wouldn’t be hard to get some votes.
By the way, how many votes does he need?

Where there is a will there is a way, and NoBama will find it.

Clinton did have the votes for the original assault weapon ban either until the very last moments…what kind of pressure can the office of the president bring to bear?

Well that was lame….Clinton DID NOT have the votes…

The president who controls appointments to the BATFE, and department policy, could seriously impact gun ownership WITHOUT votes in the House or Senate.

He can, and I suspect WOULD, do serious damage.

SCOTUS appointments is one area where The Obama could really hurt gun rights.

Gun owners were right to applaud Heller, but the pathway to gutting Heller and making it meaningless is already laid out: DC responded to Heller by creating ridiculous requirements for registering a handgun there. It’s going to take another case to find out if DC will actually have to abide by Heller.

All we need is an Obama SCOTUS to say that mandatory registration of all guns is “reasonable,” and if the registration office is only open from 0300 to 0306 on Christmas morning in odd-numbered years, that’s “reasonable” too. And oh, by the way, any firearm that can shoot more than one projectile in 10 minutes is a machine gun, and any firearm with a caliber greater than .177 is a cannon, and you can’t register machine guns or cannons.

Any SCOTUS decision is only as good as the current court’s willingness to uphold it. An Obama SCOTUS could rip the guts out of Heller within the year.

Of course he will take our guns if he could.
A liberal form Chicago that hides behind a present vote should not be trusted.

He says he supports the 2nd Amendment, but he’s for an “Assualt Weapon Ban” because he states that they’re used for criminal purposes, even through the FBI states that they aren’t.

The State of Maine has a very high gun per home ratio, but the people here seem determined to vote for Obama. I have even been ridiculed by coworkers when I mention his antigun stances. People still don’t believe that personal liberties can and WILL be taken away by the ilk of Obama. I plead with people to look very carefully at him and to NOT vote for him. All I can say is that I will NOT let them in for protection when the time comes we need to go there. How can we crack the shell that the media has built around him? Write editorials! Have all your buddies write them! Sound intelligent, do no name calling, and spread the word through the very device that Obama hides behind, the liberal media!

This is where Bush, Rove and the Republicans blew it by destroying the party as a home for conservatives. Obama will destroy the Second Amendment, Bush and his judges have wrecked the First, Fourth, Fifth. If the Repubs had been a party of small government and Bill of Rights we wouldn’t be seeing this.

    Idiots.

I was just in Maine. The people I talked to there are so anti-Bush, with good reason, that they think Obama actually makes sense, though they don’t know anything about him.

Rove and Bush could have made history and done the cause of liberty and justice a world of good. Instead, they became worse than the democrats.
