These folks say they care about your “safety” but they want to deny law-abiding, tax-paying citizens their constitutional right to an adequate self-defense:

That’s right, guns in parks. LOADED guns in parks. For some reason, the NRA thinks it’s a great idea to let anyone and everyone possess loaded weapons in our national parks. Visitor safety? Who cares, right? You care. And you know that our current policies are smart and sound, and protect the rights of gun owners and visitors’ safety equally. Allowing loaded guns in parks poses a threat to wildlife, park visitors, and puts our already over-burdened park rangers at even greater risk. The Bush Administration has opened up the regulations for comment. If they want comments, let’s not disappoint them. Submit your comments TODAY and tell them to keep the current regulations in place. Take action!

And of course, they want to blame it on everyone’s favorite paper tiger, the NRA:

Dear Friend of the National Parks,

You didn’t think this issue would go away did you? Despite our aggressive attempts to keep the NRA from pushing their political agenda to allow loaded guns in our national parks, we couldn’t stop their power. But you can. The administration, caving to pressure from the NRA, has opened up the regulations to the public for comment.

And it’s going to take ALL of us to beat the power of one of the most powerful special interests in the country.

NPCA isn’t opposed to individual gun ownership. The NRA was looking for a polarizing election-year issue and our national parks have become the target (no pun intended). You are our biggest national park supporters–and we need you to speak out. The NRA is going to put all their money and power into this issue, and it’s never been more critical for us to do the same.

Write to the Department of Interior today and urge them to keep the current regulations in place. The policies on the books right now are Reagan administration policies, and they are sound policies that respect both gun owners and park visitors alike. Gun owners can have their guns in parks, as long as they are unloaded and safely stored. Does that sound unreasonable? We didn’t think so either.

Don’t wait. Please write to DOI today and tell them to keep the current regulations in place and protect visitors and wildlife from loaded guns in national parks. Take action!
Sincerely,

Thomas C. Kiernan
President

P.S.: The NRA is not going to let up. We know you care, and we need to let the Department of Interior know this is something that we care about. Send your comments today and urge them to keep the current regulations in place. Thank you.
